Angers with the family: activities, visits and where to stay with children

Angers with children

A guide to a successful family weekend

Angers is a great city to visit with children—as long as you know what to suggest!

There is the château and its family activity booklet, Terra Botanica and its plant-themed park, the playground below the ramparts and cycling along the banks of the Maine. And then there is the Apocalypse Tapestry, which children often describe as a ‘really huge medieval monster comic’—not entirely wrong. 🙂

Five family activities in Angers

Heritage and culture:

  • Château d’Angers, with a family activity booklet (suitable from age six, with audio guides and tactile materials).
  • Terra Botanica: a plant-themed park with boat rides, 4D attractions and a tethered balloon (half a day, 15 minutes by tram or car).
  • Playground below the cathedral steps, next to the château (free, three minutes from the apartment).
  • Cycling along the Maine and Loire; bike hire is five minutes away.
  • Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine, a troglodyte zoo (45 minutes; allow half a day).
  • Puy du Fou theme park (1 hour; allow a full day).

Child-friendly accommodation

The apartment sleeps up to four people, plus one baby cot.

Ideal for a couple travelling with children.

The sofa bed converts into a comfortable double bed for adults or children. A travel cot is also available on request for your baby (cot bedding is provided).

The fully equipped kitchenette lets you prepare meals and keep to your own schedule.

Planning a family weekend

Day 1 – the centre on foot. Start at the château, directly opposite the apartment: its ramparts and 17 towers are sure to impress children, and the gardens are easy to explore with a pushchair. After lunch, head down to the Maine for a waterside stroll, then walk up Montée Saint-Maurice to the cathedral and its playground.

Day 2 – the great outdoors. Spend half a day at Terra Botanica, or hire bikes and follow the flat, safe route along the Maine to Bouchemaine. Older children may also enjoy Île Saint-Aubin, reached by a small seasonal ferry.

Practical tips for visiting with children

  • Meals: the equipped kitchenette makes it easy to prepare breakfast and snacks and work around younger children’s routines.
  • Car: free parking is 200 metres away; you can spend the rest of your stay on foot.
  • Arrival: 24-hour self check-in is handy after a long drive.
  • Train: Saint-Laud station is a five-minute walk away; Paris is directly connected by TGV.
  • Cot: a travel cot is available on request; please mention it when booking.

When to visit with the family

Spring and early summer are ideal for parks and walks. In December, the Soleils d’Hiver illuminations transform the town centre and are a hit with children. During school holidays, book early: the apartment fills quickly.
