Loire châteaux from Angers: Brissac, Serrant, Plessis-Bourré and Saumur

Mon Château Angers · Cédric’s journal6 min read

Aerial view of Angers Castle and the gardens in its moats.

Plan visits to Brissac, Serrant, Le Plessis-Bourré and Saumur, with estimated drives and a suggested three- or four-night Angers stay.

For château visits from a single Angers base, choose nearby Brissac, Serrant and Le Plessis-Bourré, then set aside a separate day for Saumur. Three or four nights allow a mix of Angers itself and outings by car. The distances and driving times below are broad planning estimates, not measured journeys; check opening days and visit arrangements directly with each château.

Four châteaux with different strengths

Brissac suits visitors interested in a grand residence and landscaped park; Serrant offers furnished interiors and a library; Le Plessis-Bourré has a moat and painted ceilings; Saumur combines a château museum with Loire views. Choose according to your interests rather than trying to collect every name. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4.

We suggest one principal visit per half-day, with breathing space for lunch and travel. A delayed departure or a longer guided tour should not turn the day into a race. With children, leave additional time between journeys and indoor visits.

Distances, driving times and opening seasons

Locations appear on the official Anjou tourist map. The road distances below are editorial estimates from central Angers, not verified official route calculations. Recalculate before departure; traffic, parking and the walk to the entrance are excluded.

Brissac: residence and park

Brissac’s official website describes it as the home of the Dukes of Brissac and France’s tallest château. Its self-guided, documented visit includes access to park walks, with regular presentations. The owner suggests around an hour and a quarter for the château itself; allow extra time for your own walk. 1

This is a useful nearby excursion without a whole day of driving. Check lunchtime closures and last admissions, however, as these can matter more than the journey length. Ask about access beforehand if steps are a concern.

Serrant: book the right kind of visit

Self-guided and guided visits do not include the same rooms. Serrant explains that its library and prestige bedrooms are accessible only with a guide for conservation reasons. If the library is your main reason for visiting, plan around a guided departure first. 1

Do not arrive at the end of the afternoon expecting access to every room. Some tours may be cancelled because of activities or group visits. Check the day’s information and call if your schedule depends on a particular departure.

Le Plessis-Bourré: moat and painted ceilings

At Écuillé, Le Plessis-Bourré combines defensive architecture, a moat and residential comfort. Its official website dates construction to 1468–1473 and highlights the painted ceilings. Choose it for the building as well as its interiors. 1

Check the monthly calendar rather than an old opening time in a search result. Guided visits, special events and exceptional closures can change the programme. For younger travellers, see our Angers family guide.

Saumur: give it a separate day

The Château de Saumur houses the decorative arts and horse museum, with views over the Loire. Its architecture and collections offer distinct reasons to visit: allow time inside if the museum interests you. 1

We recommend a separate day rather than adding it after several other châteaux. A cellar visit could complement the outing, provided you book and appoint a driver who does not drink. Maison Ackerman is in Saumur, not within the nearby Angers winery circle: our Anjou wine guide makes that distinction.

Suggested three- or four-night itinerary

Rearrange this suggested programme around actual opening days. It is not a package or a promise of availability.

  • Arrival and first night: settle into Angers and enjoy an evening without another drive. Prepare with our Château d’Angers and Apocalypse Tapestry guide.
  • First full day: visit the Château d’Angers, then Brissac if you want two contrasting visits. Alternatively, visit Brissac alone and leave time for Angers.
  • Second full day: Serrant and an unhurried return. Le Plessis-Bourré can replace it, or become a second visit only if the actual timings work.
  • Third day or fourth night: dedicate a day to Saumur. With four nights, use the extra day for the nearby château you left out rather than doubling up automatically.

With only three nights, seeing all four outlying châteaux plus Angers makes a busy stay. Choosing three may be more enjoyable. Check tickets, access and cancellation conditions before fixing your dates; do not rely on the shortest possible driving time between booked visits.

From the apartment

Mon Château Angers, at 6 boulevard du Général de Gaulle, is directly opposite the Château d’Angers. The living room faces the castle and the bedroom overlooks a quiet courtyard. The 35 m² apartment sleeps up to four: two in the bedroom and two on the living-room sofa bed. A kitchenette makes simple evenings between excursions easier.

Free outdoor parking is around 200 m away beside Théâtre Le Quai; it is not a reserved private space. See parking in Angers and practical information. Self check-in is available 24/7. Compare apartment or hotel, then book directly.

FAQ

Which château should I choose for one excursion?

Brissac for a residence and park, Serrant for guided interiors, Le Plessis-Bourré for the moat and ceilings, or Saumur for a château museum. Opening days also influence the decision.

Can I see all four in a day?

We do not recommend it. Driving is only part of the time required; visits, admission cut-offs and breaks make this an unnecessarily rushed programme.

Are the châteaux open throughout winter?

There is no common winter timetable. Some have reduced openings or events, while others have an annual closure. Check your exact date with each site.

Are the distances guaranteed from the apartment?

No. They are approximate ranges from central Angers. Recalculate for your chosen road, traffic and parking arrangements.
